Today was meant to be a late start... 11am but as a team we decided to leave about 8.45am before the briefing and the pace car (naughty!)
We had a very smooth ride with Tim taking the first leg and myself the second. We had a few stops along the way to see some magnificent views.
And then suddenly we saw this brown cloud moving towards us... Our experience drivers (Jamie and Steve) announced this was a dust storm...
WOW when the storm arrived the cars we were buffeted around. We decided to stop and have a look at one of many car wrecks abandoned by the side of the road.
Channel 7 the Sunrise team in their ebay car were also with us and it was pretty scary to have the visibility cut to 10 metres in a matter of seconds.
We decided to stop at a town called COSMO NEWBERRY but after driving into town which was obviously an aboriginal township we decided that we better move onto Laverton our final destination. Many people just stood and watched us and infact a car came out and followed us for 15kms...
Arrived at Laverton Oval very early... it was a great shame we left early as we missed out on a great photoshoot with all 200 cars back at the roadhouse as it had a nearby runway! We learnt a good lesson today stay with the pack even if it means moving slower - it is safer and more fun!
That evening we went to the local sports club and it started to rain... after a feed and a couple of cold ones.. we returned to the campsite to be hit but a real downpour..
I had to get out of the tent to secure the guy ropes as the tent was trying to take off. Tim abandoned his tent as it was leaking and moved into the car so I lay in the tent wrapped in the sleeping bag with drips coming through... luckily only a few so remained relatively dry
Tim and I were fortunate... others who were in their Swags got completely soaked... Tarps got quickly tied up but then blown off.. complete carnage...
Woke at 2am and the storm had finished... fell back to sleep and work at 5am for my early morning shower.
